"Dates" in Ramadan

In Ramadan, dates become a very important item with a very huge market, being one of the traditional food that people have in their breakfast. It's also believed that it's sunna "a prophet practice" to start your breakfast in Ramadan with a palm date.

I have read in "the caravan", the official weekly newspaper of AUC. That date merchants have the tradition of branding the different types of dates by naming them after famous celebrities that share some common attributes.

This year they have chosen four different names for the dates: Fifi Abdou Egyptian belly dancer, Leila Elwi Egyptian Actress, Nancy Agram Lebanese Singer and George Bush.

The "Fifi Abdou dates" are the best type and the most expensive. the date is in the shape of a hook and since belly dancers are known to have flexible bodies, merchants though the name Fifi abdou best fits.

The next (Leila Elwi dates) are quite expensive as well, the date is fairly large and fat resembling the physical appearance of Leila elwi.

The Agram date has no skin to it and quite thin, merchants chose to name this type of date after Nancy Agram because she is known to to dress in an neoconservative manner .

This leaves the worst and cheapest type of dates, that people don't want to eat to be named after bush.

A New Race in Town - revisited

Following up on Luly's blog Entry about the "A New Race in Town." Which is basically talking about race for the one who would kiss up the most to the new/old president.

Obviously this is a good investment, a one that pays back if you are a prominent person putting much resources in expensive billboards or newspapers Ads congratulating Mubarak for his historical victory.

But I can also recognize random people having very random trials to kiss ass without seeing any future benefits for their helpless investments. such people like restaurants and juice shops in Cairo districts. I personally don't think these random people do it because they love or believe in Mubarak but i still wonder why they do it. (May be some sort of cheap promotion for their shops.)

One extremely random kiss ass trial - rather ball sucking example as Luli says is this one

For non Arabic speakers - this banner says: "The fetus in its mother's womb says yes to Mubarak and yes to Suroor !!!!" Can someone find something more corny??

Military Service

It's confirmed
Last Thursday I asked the university military office and it turned out that I can't submit my papers for military service before this Jan. This means i finish university on Dec 25th 2005 and have to wait for a whole year till Jan 2007 to know if I will be recruited in the army to serve in some damn random desert for 1-3 years.

Result: 2-4 years wasted in the start of my career life!! Good bless the Egyptian government.
